Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological approach that integrates thoughts, language, and patterns of behavior learned through experience to achieve specific personal and professional outcomes. Its inception was aimed at replicating the strategies of successful individuals in order to create a roadmap to success for everyone.

However, despite its widespread use, NLP continues to be shrouded in mystery and misunderstandings, often dismissed as pseudoscience by skeptics. According to Fabián Tejada, an author, and prominent Master NLP trainer, one of the reasons why this field has been clouded in uncertainty and mistrust is because of a prevalent—yet groundless—belief that NLP, and hypnosis in general, is a suitable tool for manipulation. As the sole NLP Master trainer in Latin America certified by the creator of advanced NLP, he stands out as a foremost expert in the field within the region.

Tejada argues this couldn’t be further from the truth. “First of all, anything we do or say can be seen as manipulative in some way. Here’s an example: if I have a knife and give it to a criminal, there will be a bad outcome. If I give it to a doctor, they’ll use it to save a life,” he suggests.

In this context, Tejada adds that NLP and hypnosis are neutral tools that can be used to achieve one’s goals, regardless of what they are. Unfortunately, that’s part of the reason why the technique has attracted a fair share of critics.

“People think of a policymaker using these techniques to get what they want, and you instantly have a negative perception of NLP techniques,” he says. “I aim to remove the stigma around these disciplines and show people just how beneficial they can be for both personal and professional development.”

Tejada points out another common misconception: if something can’t be scientifically proven, it doesn’t work. First and foremost, he shares that profound changes can, in fact, be made in life through ‘positive expectation,’ even if this can’t be physically quantified.

“Understanding the subconscious mind is not a straightforward process. For instance, while two plus two equates to four in the conscious, logical mind, the subconscious might perceive it as eleven,” Tejada reflects.

This discrepancy often confounds those who predominantly operate from a place of conscious, logical thinking. They need to see something before they can accept it, which Tejada maintains can hinder their ability to achieve their goals, be creative, and tap into their inner resources.

“The subconscious or unconscious mind is a realm of imagination, creativity, adjustment, and manifestation. It’s crucial for people to understand and embrace this to unlock their full potential,” he states. “This is something that I try to teach everyone: you already have all the resources you need for success and happiness. You just need to learn to access and use them.”

That said, beyond this, another huge misunderstanding about NLP is that a scientific authority doesn’t back it. Tejadaexplains that this couldn’t be further from the truth, given the fact that many reputable scientists support the claim that our thoughts and emotions can, indeed, shape the world or our perception of it. Sounds familiar? It’s because this is one of the fundamental principles of quantum physics.

Although there is a divide between modern scientists who embrace quantum theories and traditional scientists who do not, it’s hard to deny the mind’s power to take control over one’s emotions and leverage them—good and bad—to set a person free from ‘self-imposed’ or ‘sub-conscious’ limitations.

Moreover, with the advent of alternative solutions within the wellness sectors, there has been a noticeable shift among people worldwide – a shift toward some non-traditional, holistic approaches. As this trend continues, Tejada says that interest in NLP has grown proportionately despite the skepticism this field has undergone over the years.

“Logical thinking has proven insufficient in addressing certain mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. To truly overcome these challenges, I believe one must delve deeper into the subconscious and seek solutions there,” he shares.

In the realm of personal and professional development and mental well-being, NLP could prove to be quite a game-changer. When properly harnessed, this tool could help countless individuals unlock the potential they never thought they had. Still, it’s important to remember that the effectiveness of these techniques lies in their correct application and understanding.

As Tejada says, “NLP and hypnosis are hugely transformational tools. That’s why we should seek accurate knowledge, dispel myths, and embrace the power of these disciplines for our personal and societal growth.”
