INTERIOR/EXTERIOR is an exhibition by New York-based American artist Darryl Westly.

Westley's work alludes to a mental space, most likely on a screen reflecting back at you, which compounds into a physical space, such as a list of handwritten hashtags or an intimate selfie snapped in some exotic bathroom beyond. That place between one’s mind and body is the vortex of the show. INTERIOR/EXTERIOR ponders our inherited confusion of contemporary perspective. In Westly’s paintings exist a universe of confirmation bias, skewed planes, disjointed landscapes, and pixelated architecture; an odalisque cuddling with HelloKitty, a patio table set before a pop-up window selling sex, and a Greco-Roman muse precariously balanced in front of an African American field worker, likely a slave. In these paintings, Westly visually walks the viewer back to a cozy place in Plato’s cave and describes to the children of the internet yet another way to comb through mediated reality. Exhibition on display until December 21, 2019.

A Boris Karloff Double-Bill for Halloween

Universal Studios was the undisputed master of horror and the macabre during the 1930s and 40s. The Alex Film Society celebrates the Halloween season with two films featuring the studios’ most popular stars…Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. The Old Dark House (1932) was assumed to be a lost classic until a film negative was discovered in the Universal vaults in 1968. It has since assumed cult-like status among fans of director James Whale, who helmed Frankenstein (1931), and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Whale packed his offbeat take on horror with star talent including Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton, Raymond Massey, Gloria Stuart and of course Karloff. AFS will be screening a glorious new 4K digital restoration. The Raven (1935) teams Karloff with his frequent onscreen nemesis, Bela Lugosi. The picture highlights Edgar Allen Poe’s famous poem and features Lugosi as a Poe-obsessed mad surgeon who just happens to have a torture chamber in his basement. Karloff is a fugitive murderer on the lam who falls victim to Lugosi’s mad schemes. Both actors were at the height of their fame, making this fast-paced thriller one of Universal’s best offerings. PERFORMANCE DATE & TIMES: October 27, 2019 7:30 PM Location: Alex Theatre 216 N Brand Blvd, Glendale, CA 91203 Websites: http://www.alexfilmsociety.org/ http://www.alextheatre.org/ https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/55991/alex-theatre/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/AlexTheatre/

Episode 3 BOSS LADIES premieres with intimate Q&A with WILD author Cheryl Strayed

The Chasing Grace Project is a docuseries about adversity and resilience among women in the technology industry. Its candid approach to storytelling has been applauded for elevating women’s voices in an industry that has fewer women than 30 years ago (NCWIT) but desperately needs women’s contributions to build the technologies that are defining our future. It uses the power of story to change the culture in tech, which is cited as the primary reason women don’t pursue tech careers or choose to leave. Strayed’s own story, as detailed in her memoir WILD and major motion picture produced by and starring Reese Witherspoon, is among the best examples of the power of story for women. By stepping into her authentic story, Strayed’s own life and career have been transformed and her journey through adversity to resilience depicted in her memoir can inspire others. Strayed’s involvement in the Chasing Grace Project will increase awareness of women in tech’s experiences, which can lead to cross-industry conversations that empower all women around the world.

Francisca Valenzuela will present live her most recent album, La Fortaleza.

Facing this new artistic challenge, the Chilean singer will celebrate the collective and the individual strength through a bold, colorful, emotional, strong and sometimes brazen look, bringing a dynamic and unforgettable experience to each of the homes of her attendants. This presentation marks the return of the artist to a "stage", after the cancellation of her tour last March, after her impeccable and commented presentation at the Viña del Mar Festival and her subsequent participation in the Vive Latino Festival in Mexico where she performed for more than 10,000 spectators. In a very special and personal presentation, the Chilean singer, songwriter and activist, Francisca Valenzuela, will perform “La Fortaleza: En Concert”. The event will be broadcasted via streaming to all of Latin America and the world, this Thursday, November 12, 2020, performing live the 14 songs that make up her most recent production, with all the scenery, visual and color work that characterizes Francisca Valenzuela. The event will be broadcasted from Los Angeles, California and can be viewed from anywhere in the world. “In this concert release I will play the 14 songs that make up my album, La Fortaleza, for the first time live from a stage in Los Angeles, California, with a new staging especially designed for this concert. It is an opportunity to connect from a distance and deliver a unique and unrepeatable show, I want to show not only the album and its songs, but also who I am as an artist, with a message of strength, vulnerability and human connection, issues that are very important to me today. I feel it as an opportunity to celebrate the community that has supported me and has been part of my career, those who have connected with my music and my project. In the show there will be moments of dance, others more intimate on the piano, we will have surprise guests who will accompany me in some songs and we will also be able to show moments that in a traditional concert are not accessible to the public, like the behind the scenes. The global crisis has not been a reason for Francisca Valenzuela to stop her work, rather it has been a great motivation to adapt quickly to the needs of the moment. Among several “lives” from her social media accounts, to a podcast that leads by interviewing different Latin American artists through the feminist platform Ruidosa - founded in 2016- Francisca has found the space to send a message of hope and unity. Despite the distance, she has managed to captivate her fans through the music video that shares the name of this new album's title. The official video of the song "La Fortaleza", summoned more than 1,700 of her followers from around the world, who sent videos of their life in a pandemic, sharing their intimacy and strength. The Chilean company Romero & Campbell Producciones in Chile and the production company Ocesa in Mexico, co-produce and coordinate “La Fortaleza: In concert”, which will be broadcasted on Thursday, November 12 in a single transmission for the whole world: 9:00 p.m. Chile and Argentina, 7:00 p.m. Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Mexico, 4:00 p.m. Los Angeles (PST) and 8:00 p.m. New York (EST). Ticket sales are available by entering www.franciscavalenzuela.live Early bird (just for 72 hrs): $5 USD + service charges Presale: $7 USD + service charges General: $9 USD + service charges General + Meet & Greet: $32 USD + service charges

A virtual free event to end this year with compassion as a community.

If 2020 has been an unfamiliar, challenging, and hopefully a learning year. And that’s why we’ve decided to create a virtual free event to end this year with compassion as a community. Being together has so many forms, and we are inviting you to the one that is available to many, and open to all. Mitra Manesh, in collaboration with UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, invite you to an evening of meditation, contemplative music, mindful movement, 2020 insights / Q & A, and a practice on how to mindfully move forward into the new year. Waste is Gold is an anti-food waste popup featuring gourmet dishes made from food waste ingredients.

Waste is Gold is an anti-food waste "popup" with restaurants in Los Angeles taking place November 19-21, featuring restaurants that have created dishes made out of food waste ingredients. Participating chefs are challenged to design a dish or repurpose an existing menu item and customers can order these items this weekend for takeout or outdoor dining. In the US alone, 40% of all food produced goes uneaten, making up 133 billion pounds in landfills and totaling $161 billion of food waste per year. In an effort to combat impending climate change, California state bill 1383 also sets a statewide target to reduce organic waste in landfills by 50 percent by 2020, and to recover at least 20 percent of edible food waste by 2025. It's in this backdrop that Choco - a new app providing free order management technology to restaurants and food suppliers - has organized this campaign. The initiative is a mash up of food, sustainability and technology, topics the restaurant industry is grappling with to survive and thrive in the coming months. Participating restaurants: Counterpart Vegan - Echo Park (1559 Echo Park Ave, Los Angeles, CA), Strings of Life - West Hollywood (609 N W Knoll Dr, West Hollywood, CA), Beelman’s - DTLA (600 S Spring St, Los Angeles, CA) Dishes: Farmers market ratatouille with squash, Skull island tiger prawn bisque, Tomato soup with various leftover vegetables

Learn more about Biddy Mason!

The Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation and Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation-Los Angeles are proud to present a Wreath Laying Ceremony in honor of Bridget “Biddy” Mason. As a visionary philanthropist and the first Black woman to purchase land in Los Angeles, Biddy was an instrumental figure and foremother to the development of our city. Despite Biddy Mason’s wealth, prominence, and service at the time of her death, Biddy was buried for nearly 100 years in an unmarked grave at Evergreen Cemetery in Boyle Heights. As a way to commemorate her legacy we will gather at Biddy’s resting place on her birthday to remember her story of resilience that continues to inspire us today. At the wreath-laying ceremony, we will hear from local historians, community leaders and honor Biddy’s life with a birthday cake! To register, please visit our website.

WAVEFORM features four time-based installations that explore human perception of light and sound.

WAVEFORM features four time-based installations that explore human perception of light and sound. Curated by CultureHub LA, WAVEFORM is the first installment in a series of group exhibitions presenting Los Angeles artists exploring innovative storytelling through emerging technology. Works investigate the interaction and translation between sound frequencies and light wavelengths, and propose new forms of agency in non-physical environments and in relation to intangible elements. Laura Sofía Pérez and Chris Ryan Williams present I Ain’t Got No Spare, a performative and interactive installation exploring themes of the Black experience and the ephemerality of Black agency, using Los Angeles as a case study. Josephine Wang presents Spectrum, a multimedia installation converging sound and light in a performative environment, live-animating visible light spectrum with a wall of 800 LEDs through an algorithmic translation of audible sound frequencies. Lisa Müller-Trede presents collider getting sick, a short virtual situation investigating impact as motoric guidance, as the body oozes in between. Laura Sofía Pérez presents Grew Out the Concrete, a video installation that captures the afternoon lights and shadows cast on the sidewalks of City Terrace, Los Angeles through a slow-motion journey. On opening night (September 14th @ 5 pm & 7:30 pm), the pieces will be activated through live performance. WAVEFORM is open to the public free of charge between September 14th - September 19th.
