Algorithms of Our Own is a community event about beginnings, middles, and ends. The event sends off and honors the work of our featured artist who has graced our space over the past month, celebrating how they have produced work in the space and sharing how community has engaged with the work. Algorithms of Our Own is about community—for community that has no history with technology, but has ideas, and for people working in the tech community as researchers, artists or explorers. Algorithms of Our Own hopes to create a space for people to co-create their algorithmic futures together though AI projects, research, ideas and community. In keeping with Feminist.AI's history, the primary goal of the event is to continue to explore the social and cultural implications of Artificial Intelligence. We couldn't be more honored to have had Sarah Ciston as our first featured artist. Being a part of, and working with Feminist.AI, she gracefully helped us figure out how to navigate community work, her work, and sharing that work with others. Her show, MODIFY THE LOSS, explores what it means to process code through bodies and machines—through three projects that use different lenses, ladymouth.wtf, inner(voice)over, and Modify the Loss, her work explores these communications codes as they move throughout these technologies and people. During the celebration, Sarah will share artifacts that emerged from and were contributed to Modify the Loss, an analog, active, walkable, community space in the form of a gallery-sized labyrinth and artistic-research project that evolved over the month-long exhibition. Starting from the loss function, which in machine learning aims to minimize error so as to assure the machine behaves as intended, the labyrinth winds in and out to consider embodied forms of processing code and trauma—wayfinding for a queer processing language. Join us for this opportunity to interact with and contribute to this evolving work and be part of the Feminist.AI community. 6-7:30pm Community AI Art & Performance: * User Manual on AI and Gender Bias by Nina Shahriaree * Performance with custom ML midi controller and modular synth by Odie DeSmith, CalArts; * Posthuman Politics by Eilidh Welsh (via skype) * Feminist.AI Community Projects Programming 7:30-9pm: MODIFY THE LOSS Closing Ceremonies *Performance, Readings, and Rituals by Artist & Invited Guests *Community Labyrinth Walk 9-11pm: Dancing and Conversation * Music by Intension graphic design by Nina Shahriaree RSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/algorithms-of-our-own-tickets-84836483205

Westley's work alludes to a mental space, most likely on a screen reflecting back at you, which compounds into a physical space, such as a list of handwritten hashtags or an intimate selfie snapped in some exotic bathroom beyond. That place between one’s mind and body is the vortex of the show. INTERIOR/EXTERIOR ponders our inherited confusion of contemporary perspective. In Westly’s paintings exist a universe of confirmation bias, skewed planes, disjointed landscapes, and pixelated architecture; an odalisque cuddling with HelloKitty, a patio table set before a pop-up window selling sex, and a Greco-Roman muse precariously balanced in front of an African American field worker, likely a slave. In these paintings, Westly visually walks the viewer back to a cozy place in Plato’s cave and describes to the children of the internet yet another way to comb through mediated reality. Exhibition on display until December 21, 2019.

The Chasing Grace Project is a docuseries about adversity and resilience among women in the technology industry. Its candid approach to storytelling has been applauded for elevating women’s voices in an industry that has fewer women than 30 years ago (NCWIT) but desperately needs women’s contributions to build the technologies that are defining our future. It uses the power of story to change the culture in tech, which is cited as the primary reason women don’t pursue tech careers or choose to leave. Strayed’s own story, as detailed in her memoir WILD and major motion picture produced by and starring Reese Witherspoon, is among the best examples of the power of story for women. By stepping into her authentic story, Strayed’s own life and career have been transformed and her journey through adversity to resilience depicted in her memoir can inspire others. Strayed’s involvement in the Chasing Grace Project will increase awareness of women in tech’s experiences, which can lead to cross-industry conversations that empower all women around the world.

As the classic cannabis brownie or cookie is how many people try an edible for the first time, it really shouldn’t be any big surprise that cannabis and butter make a delightful pairing. It can be used in any recipe requiring butter, and whether simply adding it to toast or making a more involved meal, such as lemon butter chicken, Weedmaps has the ultimate butter recipe for you.
Edibles are favored in the cannabis community for their dosing ease, long-lasting effects, and, in some cases, extra strength. Using many ingredients already in your pantry, you can make your own tasty treats in the comfort of your kitchen. Not only can Weedmaps help you learn to make infused edibles at home, you can also use the site to find the cannabis products to make them.

Universal Studios was the undisputed master of horror and the macabre during the 1930s and 40s. The Alex Film Society celebrates the Halloween season with two films featuring the studios’ most popular stars…Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. The Old Dark House (1932) was assumed to be a lost classic until a film negative was discovered in the Universal vaults in 1968. It has since assumed cult-like status among fans of director James Whale, who helmed Frankenstein (1931), and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Whale packed his offbeat take on horror with star talent including Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton, Raymond Massey, Gloria Stuart and of course Karloff. AFS will be screening a glorious new 4K digital restoration. The Raven (1935) teams Karloff with his frequent onscreen nemesis, Bela Lugosi. The picture highlights Edgar Allen Poe’s famous poem and features Lugosi as a Poe-obsessed mad surgeon who just happens to have a torture chamber in his basement. Karloff is a fugitive murderer on the lam who falls victim to Lugosi’s mad schemes. Both actors were at the height of their fame, making this fast-paced thriller one of Universal’s best offerings. PERFORMANCE DATE & TIMES: October 27, 2019 7:30 PM Location: Alex Theatre 216 N Brand Blvd, Glendale, CA 91203 Websites: http://www.alexfilmsociety.org/ http://www.alextheatre.org/ https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/55991/alex-theatre/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/AlexTheatre/
Medical marijuana has been steadily making its way across the country, with more and more states legalizing programs to connect patients in need with medical cannabis. However, not all patients can physically access doctors, who are the gatekeepers of medical marijuana in all legalized states. Whether barred by distance or circumstance, these patients benefit from technological advancements that allow them to connect with doctors online for cannabis evaluations. Weedmaps facilitates those connections.

Facing this new artistic challenge, the Chilean singer will celebrate the collective and the individual strength through a bold, colorful, emotional, strong and sometimes brazen look, bringing a dynamic and unforgettable experience to each of the homes of her attendants. This presentation marks the return of the artist to a "stage", after the cancellation of her tour last March, after her impeccable and commented presentation at the Viña del Mar Festival and her subsequent participation in the Vive Latino Festival in Mexico where she performed for more than 10,000 spectators. In a very special and personal presentation, the Chilean singer, songwriter and activist, Francisca Valenzuela, will perform “La Fortaleza: En Concert”. The event will be broadcasted via streaming to all of Latin America and the world, this Thursday, November 12, 2020, performing live the 14 songs that make up her most recent production, with all the scenery, visual and color work that characterizes Francisca Valenzuela. The event will be broadcasted from Los Angeles, California and can be viewed from anywhere in the world. “In this concert release I will play the 14 songs that make up my album, La Fortaleza, for the first time live from a stage in Los Angeles, California, with a new staging especially designed for this concert. It is an opportunity to connect from a distance and deliver a unique and unrepeatable show, I want to show not only the album and its songs, but also who I am as an artist, with a message of strength, vulnerability and human connection, issues that are very important to me today. I feel it as an opportunity to celebrate the community that has supported me and has been part of my career, those who have connected with my music and my project. In the show there will be moments of dance, others more intimate on the piano, we will have surprise guests who will accompany me in some songs and we will also be able to show moments that in a traditional concert are not accessible to the public, like the behind the scenes. The global crisis has not been a reason for Francisca Valenzuela to stop her work, rather it has been a great motivation to adapt quickly to the needs of the moment. Among several “lives” from her social media accounts, to a podcast that leads by interviewing different Latin American artists through the feminist platform Ruidosa - founded in 2016- Francisca has found the space to send a message of hope and unity. Despite the distance, she has managed to captivate her fans through the music video that shares the name of this new album's title. The official video of the song "La Fortaleza", summoned more than 1,700 of her followers from around the world, who sent videos of their life in a pandemic, sharing their intimacy and strength. The Chilean company Romero & Campbell Producciones in Chile and the production company Ocesa in Mexico, co-produce and coordinate “La Fortaleza: In concert”, which will be broadcasted on Thursday, November 12 in a single transmission for the whole world: 9:00 p.m. Chile and Argentina, 7:00 p.m. Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Mexico, 4:00 p.m. Los Angeles (PST) and 8:00 p.m. New York (EST). Ticket sales are available by entering www.franciscavalenzuela.live Early bird (just for 72 hrs): $5 USD + service charges Presale: $7 USD + service charges General: $9 USD + service charges General + Meet & Greet: $32 USD + service charges
