Calendar: Know Biddy: A Story of Resilience

August 15, 2019

Learn more about Biddy Mason!

The Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation and Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation-Los Angeles are proud to present a Wreath Laying Ceremony in honor of Bridget “Biddy” Mason.

As a visionary philanthropist and the first Black woman to purchase land in Los Angeles, Biddy was an instrumental figure and foremother to the development of our city. Despite Biddy Mason’s wealth, prominence, and service at the time of her death, Biddy was buried for nearly 100 years in an unmarked grave at Evergreen Cemetery in Boyle Heights.

As a way to commemorate her legacy we will gather at Biddy’s resting place on her birthday to remember her story of resilience that continues to inspire us today. At the wreath-laying ceremony, we will hear from local historians, community leaders and honor Biddy’s life with a birthday cake!
