BelicoFest brought its música mexicana celebration to Los Angeles for the first time on July 12, filling BMO Stadium with more than 17,500 fans for a single-day bill that mixed established regional acts with newer voices and unexpected crossovers.

Tito Double P closed the night as headliner, at one point bringing his robot companion, Robotito Double P, onstage in a moment that extended one of the genre’s running bits into the stadium setting. Earlier sets kept energy high: Gerardo Ortiz, Santa Fe Klan, Régulo Caro, Chuyin, Snow Tha Product and Clave Especial all performed. Clave Especial shared the stage with Los Gemelos de Sinaloa for their collaborative track “FERRARI.” OhGeesy of Shoreline Mafia turned his portion of the show into a local hip-hop reunion by inviting Ty Dolla $ign and YG.

The festival, now in its third year after starting in Arizona, is produced by For The Culture with support from 515 Entertainment. Co-founder Andrés Charvel framed the move into California as a natural step for the genre’s recent growth.

“Música mexicana has exploded over the last few years, and we saw an opportunity to honor that growth — the sound, the music, the people — on a stage built with real production value and an even stronger lineup of artists,” Charvel said. “Bringing that to California is really special, the culture is so deeply ingrained here, with so many Mexicans calling this state home. We saw that firsthand with the crowd in LA, and we will bring that same energy to San Jose — the first-ever show at PayPal Park, and the first música mexicana show of its kind in the city.”

That next stop is scheduled for August 29. Organizers have also pointed toward further expansion, including Mexico City. The Los Angeles date underscored how the festival aims to match the scale of the music’s audience with production and programming that treat the genre as both cultural expression and in-person festivity.
