Parallel Practices: Tailored Structures & Kinetic Surfaces opens at the Albertz Benda Gallery on Friday, July 17, and will run through Saturday, Aug. 8. The art exhibition will unite  Felipe Pantone and Etai for the first time. 

Pantone is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking explorations of color, movement, and visual systems, and Etai is a rising and sought-after voice whose practice operates at the intersection of fashion and design. The exhibit brings together Pantone’s wall-based artworks and a series of collaborative design pieces presented throughout the gallery, housed in a mid-century modern home. Through their distinct yet converging practices, the artists’ questions of use, intimacy, and lived experience position each work as part of an interconnected artistic system rather than a singular object. 

California Light and Space (The 21st Century Version) runs through Saturday, Aug. 1, at the David Zwirner Gallery, a group exhibition organized by Helen Molesworth,  featuring a selection of artists who make up the city’s arts scene.

The presentation considers how the terroir of Los Angeles affects the overarching concerns and tendencies of the work being produced here today. LA is frequently identified with the Light and Space artists of the 1960s and 1970s, whose work was characterized by industrial materials, highly finished surfaces, and a preoccupation with perception. This show brings together a subsequent generation of artists working across a range of media. It suggests that they are also concerned with the specificity of the light and space conditions offered by LA.

As Molesworth notes in a press release, “Like their predecessors, the new LA artists are deeply embedded in the vernacular quality of the city. They are making work that couldn’t be made anywhere else but in LA. They are less interested in Hollywood and its spectacles than they are invested in the everyday handmade quality of East and South LA, paying close attention to how we live now—from what our homes look like, to LA’s famed magic hour.”

The exhibition includes Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Sonia Boyajian, Noah Davis, Rafa Esparza, Jennifer Guidi, Lauren Halsey, EJ Hill, Thomas Houseago, Manuel López, Rodney McMillian, Mr. Wash, Catherine Opie, Hilary Pecis, Lari Pittman, Jason Rhoades, Cauleen Smith, and Lily Stockman, among others.

Celebrate Bastille Day on Wednesday, July 15, with Village Square: Gifts of Modern Art from the Pearlman Collection to the Brooklyn Museum, LACMA, and MoMA, bringing together nearly 50 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from the Henry and Rose Pearlman Collection, showcasing expressive landscapes and striking portraits by Cézanne, Degas, Manet, Modigliani, Sisley, Soutine, Toulouse-Lautrec, and others.
