When the Chinese American Museum (CAM) opened downtown in the Garnier Building six years ago, the museum recreated the Sun Wing Wo General Store and Herb Shop that had been located in the building for decades. The circa 1891 one-stop shop was a sort of Walmart of the turn of the century, complete with a local bank, general supplies, food and medicinal herbs (and like today, prescriptions for herbal remedies were often required).

On the second Wednesday of each month (next week, for those of us thrown awry by the late Labor Day weekend), 80-something Albert Lew leads of tour of the recreated shop where he worked beginning in 1937 as a teenager who had recently immigrated to Los Angeles from China. Ask him what he thinks about Kimchi tacos.

CAM: 425 N. Los Angeles St., Downtown Los Angeles. The Sun Wing Wo General Store is an ongoing exhibition. For more information, call (213) 485-8567. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. Admission, $3 adults, $2 students and seniors.
