John Waters mania took over Los Angeles late last month, with an exhibit in his honor at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and the unveiling of the legendary filmmaker’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With October in full swing, now is a great time to check out the retrospective, John Waters: Pope of Trash, the first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to Waters’ ground-breaking movies, aesthetic and ideas. It runs through August of next year.
We also recommend the adjacent installation, Outside The Mainstream, paying homage to the work of other similarly alternative-minded, non-conformist filmmakers such as Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, Gregg Araki, and Todd Haynes.
In addition to the exhibit, the museum still has screening events through the end of October too. As of this writing, tickets are still available for Desperate Living (Oct. 20), a double feature screening of Pecker and Cry-Baby (Oct. 26), and a double feature screening of Cecil B. Demented and A Dirty Shame (Oct. 28). More info at academymuseum.org.
