We are perennially wondering what to do on Saturday. It has to be special. It has to be great. But it also has to be relaxing. It should feel like a vacation. On August 8th, 2008, (08/08/08), the Blue Palms Brewhouse opened on Hollywood and Gower and immediately vaulted itself into the upper echelon of the beer vanguard in Los Angeles. Tomorrow, Saturday August 14th, Blue Palms Brewhouse will be celebrating its second anniversary.

Blue Palms is run by the charming and affable Brian Lenzo, who along with enjoying a good beer, also enjoys a good surprise. He told me some of the details of the event — incredibly rare beers, roasting a 200 pound hog, smoking 400 pounds of spare ribs — but also requested that I keep a lot of other special details out of this story because he wanted all of his guests to be “blown away.” Here are the basic facts. It's open to the public. He's taking over the parking lot next door (the parking lot of the Henry Fonda Theatre) and will have a special beer truck and some jockey boxes. This will boost his tap count from a respectable 24 to an outrageous 52. There is a VIP aspect to the event. For $40 you get 10 tasting tickets to sample some of the world's rarest beers. Brian ran down a partial list of these beers to me and my first and only response was, “No way! How the &^$# did you even GET these beers?” The event runs from 2 p.m. until 2 a.m.

This endorsement is coming from a guy who owns a competing beer bar a couple of miles away.

Jason Bernstein is the co-owner of Golden State.
