Prepare for an exciting adventure in The Color of the Rift by Paul R. Fioroni, a novel that mixes history, science fiction, and fantasy into a thrilling tale. This story pulls you into a universe torn apart by the Rift, a glowing, living portal that fuels conflict and chaos.
James and Benjamin, two young heroes, must face dangerous villains, unlock their unique powers, and fight to heal their broken worlds. With action, magic, and big ideas about unity and hatred, this book is perfect for readers who love epic stories that keep them hooked.
The Rift: A Cosmic Wound
The story starts with the Rift, a shimmering portal created in 1347 by priests using the energy of a dying star. This tear in reality causes strange events—fish turning into other-worldly skeletal remains, mirrors showing other worlds, and times and skies dripping with prismatic colors.
The Rift links two worlds: one shaped by racial struggles, and another ruled by Black elites. Artifacts like glowing orbs and sharp Torebulian daggers add a mix of magic and mystery, making the setting feel alive and otherworldly. The Rift’s sentient nature, sending visions and emotions, drives the story’s fantasy feel and sets up the battle for balance.
Villains Born from Endless Hate
General Marcus Jackson and Captain Joseph Whitemore are the book’s complex villains, each fueled by personal pain and deep grudges. Marcus, a war hero scarred by his mother’s execution, wants to rewrite history using a cruel machine powered by sacrifices.
His kidnapping of his sister’s adopted daughter, Marcella, shows his ruthless side, though moments of regret make him human. Joseph, a naval captain, seeks revenge for his brother’s death, using deadly bombs to destroy the Rift and clinging to his prejudice. Their flaws and motives make them villains you can’t ignore, showing how hate can twist even the strongest hearts.
The Enlil: A Monster of Vengeance
The story’s darkest moment comes when Marcus and Joseph merge into the Enlil, a terrifying creature born from their lifelong hatred. Their bodies fuse through black, twisting tendrils in a crumbling arena inside the Rift, creating a giant evil creature with Marcus’s broad shoulders, Joseph’s sharp nose, and eerie dual-colored eyes.
The Enlil wields powers that can reshape reality, launching black orbs that destroy everything they come into contact with. It’s a scary symbol of what happens when hate takes over, yet a flicker of Marcus’s humanity—saving his nephewfrom debris—adds a sad layer to this unstoppable force.

Heroes and Their Rift-Born Powers
James Whitemore and Benjamin Jackson, two young boys from opposite worlds, become heroes with incredible abilities tied to the Rift. James, haunted by his father’s death, controls wind, water, and lightning, using cyclones to block attacks and water to heal friends.
His powers grow as he faces guilt, marked by a glowing Ankh on his neck. Benjamin, Marcus’s nephew, commands earth, fire, and stone, raising walls for protection and throwing flaming daggers. A newly implanted crystal eye grants him sharp vision, allowing him to see paths or catch glimpses of the future and utilize power beyond measure, shooting fire blasts and beams of heat from it. Their powers, tied to special marks, make them a dynamic duo ready to save their worlds.
The Hekarai: Unity’s Bright Hope
The heart of the story lies in the Hekarai, a radiant force born when James and Benjamin combine their powers. In a magical temple on the sacred waters of Mirror Lake, they face trials that test their fears—James’s guilt and Benjamin’s anger. By overcoming these, their energies merge into a glowing storm of gold and violet light, fixing the temple’s cracks and fighting evil as one.
The Hekarai, marked by glowing symbols on their hands, symbolize their bond and mission to unite people. This is a hopeful contrast to the Enlil, which shows how teamwork and trust can overcome even the darkest threats.
The Color of the Rift by Paul R. Fioroni is an adventure you won’t forget. Its mix of fantasy, history, and big ideas about coming together makes it stand out. The villains are complex, the heroes are easy to root for, and the magical world feels fresh and exciting.
This book has everything from epic battles to moments of friendship and sacrifice. Whether you’re into action, magic, or stories about healing divides, this novel delivers.
