A truly historic event tonight at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater: the “re-premiere” of the first three reels of The White Shadow, a silent film written and edited in 1924 by Alfred Hitchcock. The film, long assumed to be lost, was found in a collection of unidentified silent prints held at the New Zealand Film Archive, and it's the earliest Hitchcock project believed to currently exist. The three reels screening represent a little more than half of the full film; Eva Marie Saint will be on hand tonight to describe what remains lost. The event also includes screenings of two additional silents found in the same archive: Mabel Normand's Won in a Closet and the Monty Banks comedy Oil's Well.
Also tonight, Cinefamily launches a tribute to George Kuchar, the legendary avant-comic/camp underground film and video maker, who passed away earlier this month. Cinefamily will be screening It Came From Kuchar, Jennifer Kroot's documentary on George and his brother, Mike, tonight and tomorrow; Kuchar's 8 mm, 16 mm and video shorts (including his early masterpiece, Hold Me While I'm Naked) on Friday and Saturday; and the infamous smut-noir feature Thundercrack!, starring and written by George and directed by his sometime boyfriend Curt McDowell, on Sept. 30.
Finally, it's the last night to catch Shut Up Little Man! at the Sunset 5 and Summer Pasture at the Music Hall. The latter moves to the Monica for Saturday/Sunday morning screenings this weekend.

The Oregonian, a Sundance midnight favorite in the Lynch/Jodorowsky trajectory that director Calvin Reeder has described as a “psychic mystery,” has its local premiere tonight at midnight at Cinefamily.
Sun., Sept. 25
The American Cinematheque's tribute to Michael Powell and Emeric Pressberger continues with a double feature of The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus — both recently restored, both gorgeous.
