At Yamashiro, our core principles are deeply rooted in respect for our rich history, exceptional service, and unwavering commitment to our community. As one of Los Angeles’ most historic landmarks, we take immense pride in maintaining the integrity of the building and its original architecture. Furthermore, we know that our success is built upon the love and support of our community. The people of Los Angeles are at the heart of everything we do. How was Yamashiro able to extend their care to first responders fighting the tragic LA fires?

At Yamashiro, we are deeply committed to giving back to the community that has supported us throughout the years, especially in times of crisis. While we wish we could extend our care to all the brave first responders fighting the devastating fires across Los Angeles, our connection to Station 90 in Van Nuys made it a personal mission to support them directly. Station 90 is not just another fire station; it plays a crucial role in the logistics of the firefighting efforts, particularly as they are located near the Van Nuys Airport, where many of the planes used in the air attack on the fires take off. Additionally, they manage the fueling and planning for these planes, working tirelessly to contain the fires.

Knowing that many of the firefighters at Station 90 had been working around the clock for days and hadn’t had the chance to return home or enjoy a warm meal, our chefs at Yamashiro decided to step in and show our gratitude. We prepared over 30 hot, nourishing meals to provide the first responders with a taste of home—meals they otherwise hadn’t had time to prepare for themselves. This gesture, while small in comparison to their immense dedication and sacrifice, was our way of saying thank you for their service and ensuring they received some comfort during such a challenging time. We understand the importance of supporting those who give so much of themselves to protect our community, and we are proud to have been able to extend our care in this way.

How was Yamashiro impacted as a landmark by the firestorms that occurred in Los Angeles?

On Wednesday, January 8th, Yamashiro found itself in the midst of a tense and terrifying situation as the Sunset Fire sparked up and quickly spread across the hill, dangerously close to our historic building. As we remained open for service, we watched in real-time as the flames grew rapidly, threatening not only the safety of our guests and staff but also the integrity of our iconic landmark. The fire moved so quickly that we were immediately put under evacuation orders, and without hesitation, our team worked swiftly to ensure the safety of everyone in the building. We prioritized getting our guests and staff out of the area as the fire crept closer.

Being a 100-year-old structure, Yamashiro is especially vulnerable to fire, and we were deeply concerned for the preservation of both the building and its history. As the fire raged on, we could only watch and pray, hoping the winds would shift and protect our beloved restaurant. Thankfully, the fire changed direction, sparing Yamashiro. It burned around the perimeter of our property, and, despite the harrowing experience, we were incredibly fortunate that our historic landmark remained untouched. The fear and uncertainty of that day have only reinforced our gratitude for the community, our resilience, and the importance of protecting what makes this place so special.

By supporting these vital causes, we hope to inspire others to do the same, creating a stronger and more compassionate community for everyone.
