If you’ve ever dreamed of diving headfirst into a chaotic, sun-soaked escapade filled with shady deals, covert missions, and high-seas hijinks, then all with your profound imagination all can be possible through the pages of this book, “One Drunkin’ Monkee”, by W.C Beattie.
The story centers on Morgan MacShane, a recently retired Army officer lured to South Florida by his old Army buddy, T.C. Allen. Promised a lucrative salvage operation, MacShane instead finds himself staring at a rusted-out freighter named Sequoia—a so-called “business investment” that smells more like a scam. But behind the vessel’s peeling paint lies a world of hidden luxury, a treasure map, and a wild plan that sends MacShane and a ragtag crew on a dangerous hunt through the Caribbean’s stormy waters.
From the opening scene, where T.C.’s laid-back hustle collides with MacShane’s military rigidity, readers are immersed in a buddy dynamic that fuels the book’s humor and heart. Add in Holly, a bold and beautiful exotic dancer who’s anything but a cliché, and you’ve got a cast of misfits who are as endearing as they are unpredictable.
The charm of One Drunkin’ Monkee lies in its genre-bending brilliance. It’s part nautical adventure, part crime thriller, sprinkled with military espionage, and served with a twist of comedic genius. Beattie masterfully balances fast-paced action—complete with gunfire, high-speed chases, and secret terrorist outposts—with moments of camaraderie and vulnerability.
One of the most striking aspects of the novel is its authentic depiction of South Florida’s boating scene, from the sleek go-fast boats to the seedy underbelly of maritime smuggling. The novel doesn’t just entertain—it immerses. You’ll taste the salt in the air, feel the Florida heat, and hear the engine roar as Sequoia charges through treacherous waters.
One Drunkin’ Monkee also taps into deeper themes: loyalty, redemption, the scars of military service, and the pursuit of purpose in retirement. MacShane’s journey isn’t just about gold—it’s about rediscovering identity, finding connection, and choosing adventure over comfort.
In short, W.C. Beattie’s debut is a bold, raucous romp that feels like Indiana Jones crash-landing in Miami Vice. With its colorful characters, unpredictable twists, and salty sense of humor, this book is perfect for lovers of Clive Cussler, Carl Hiaasen, or anyone who’s ever wanted to trade their office desk for a treasure map and a bottle of rum.
About the Author
W.C. moved to South Florida with his family in 1971 at the age of fifteen. Growing up and coming of age during this time was an experience he would never have had in his home state of N.J. Owning his own boat was the ultimate, fishing all day, booze cursing with the waitresses enjoying the go-fast boats and luxury yachts as they pass by, only enhanced living the lifestyle. Occasional interaction with the Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies on the water provided him with some of the material for the stories and descriptions in his new book.
