How many musicians win four gold medals in a lifetime — let alone in a single year? Here's one: Petronel Malan. In 2000, the young South African keyboard wizard walked away with first prizes at the Louise McMahon International Music Competition, the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition, the Hilton Head International Piano Competition and the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition. Since then, she's dazzled audiences everywhere with her artistry and received multiple Grammy nominations for her “Transfigured” series of recordings that includes Transfigured Bach, Transfigured Mozart, Transfigured Beethoven and Transfigured Tchaikovsky. What makes these renditions unique is Malan's decision to perform “radically transformative” transcriptions of the great composers' works, which, along with her astounding technique and sensibility, take them into an entirely new dimension. This week, Malan performs selections from her recordings at LACMA's Bing Theater — another amazing opportunity to hear a world-class artist free of charge, courtesy of Sundays Live. 5905 Wilshire Blvd.; Sun., Sept. 9, 6 p.m.; free.
