When we initially sat down with Adam Richman at the bar of the Four Season's hotel in Beverly Hills, we were hoping to get a top five list of best sandwiches in L.A. It made sense since he was in town plugging his new show, Best Sandwich in America on Travel Channel. But we were more intrigued by his vagabond lifestyle. “If you add it up, I've flown a total of one month this year,” he said, scrolling through his cell phone flight tracking app, which tallied to about 90. Richman spoke on the pitfalls of flying, airplane food, lost baggage, Twitter hissy fits and hotel visits.
It's about managing expectations, Richman says of traveling. “People think that I bitch about it all the time … but it's where I live,” he says, describing incidences of mystery meat, jello-like desserts and lost bags. When the former Man vs. Food star isn't eating food out of a vacuum-sealed bag, he most likely can be found in a five-star hotel ordering room service and deciding what to eat for brunch. 5. Four Seasons:
Richman is fond of the hotel's skillet scrambled eggs with fennel sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms, onion, arugula, mozzarella and the huevos rancheros with sunnyside-up eggs, oaxaca cheese and chorizo. “Their Italian job juice blend is rather tasty,” he adds. 300 South Doheny Drive, Los Angeles; (310) 860-4000.
“Their mini bar is the best mini bar. Andrew Zimmern will back me up on this,” says Richman. Aside from the chocolate covered blueberries, the best part of Shutters, he says, is the ocean view. Proving that men like to be pampered too, the ideal situation, he explains, is where you open your shutters while in a luxurious bathtub and look onto the ocean. “That said, there are many amenities for the bath: salts, fizzing mineral potions and such located right in the minibar.” 1 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica; (310) 458-0030.
3. Beverly Wilshire:
Recommended is the chicken sausage, huevos rancheros, chicken club (not turkey) with fries and a carafe of iced tea. But be sure that there is no middle piece of bread on the chicken club, Richman insists. “It is worth noting that they also use avocado. I usually order a side of blue cheese for the fries and hot sauce for just about everything else.” They even cut the crusts off, he beams. 2. The Redbury:
