Sometimes it's difficult to find upscale Los Angeles restaurants that are open on Mondays, a day when many close for what is often the staff's only day off. And sometimes it's difficult to find such restaurants open for lunch on weekdays. Hatfield's can check off both categories, as they're open for lunch as of last week. Quinn and Karen Hatfield's restaurant, which reopened in February in the former Red Pearl space on Melrose, serves two different pre-fixe lunch menus, as well as a la carte dishes.

So what's on the menu? Mustard green and ricotta agnolotti; beet-cured fluke with buckwheat crisps and herbed yoghurt; a lobster club sandwich on house-made brioche with curried onion fries. Etc. And while you're waiting for your buttermilk panna cotta, be sure to watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen. The kitchen is gorgeous enough–the pastry station was designed by Michel Richard–but how often do you see chefs at work actually wearing toques? The restaurant should have a Professional Hat Day, where everyone who wears a hat to work wears it in for lunch or dinner. Just a thought.

Hatfield's: 6703 Melrose Ave., Hollywood; (323) 935-2977.
