Pop singer/songwriter Teddi Gold performs at the Hotel Cafe this week, so we sat down to discuss her career so far…

L.A. WEEKLY: When did you start singing, writing and performing, and when did you realize it could be a career?

TEDDI GOLD: I started writing poetry and it naturally evolved into songwriting about five years ago. I started writing music just for fun, but after I wrote the songs for this EP I realized it could be a career.

Describe your sound…

I would say it’s upbeat pop music that incorporates elements of foley. I like to use vocal sampling and ad-libs throughout my songs. My sound has been described as “unconventional” and “unique” pop music. I would probably contribute that to my upbringing. I spent my formative years growing up on an island in the Caribbean and I drew influence from the sounds and music I heard growing up.

What do you think of the current music scene in L.A.?

The music scene is vast and diverse, and that’s why I love it. There are so many artists experimenting with different sounds and genre blending and the music community over all feels supportive.

What can we expect from this Hotel Cafe set?

I am going to play the songs off my self-titled debut EP as well as a few unreleased songs that no one has heard before. This is going to be my first show to kick it off so it’s going to be a dance party!

What’s next?

I am releasing my next single Figure It Out on June 28th, and I am opening for Kara Connolly at the Peppermint Club on July 12 at 7 p.m. so if you can’t make it to the hotel cafe show, you can catch me there!
