Jon StojanMary Stanley, the founder of Supportive Minds, revealed Building Bridges, a radio show expected to launch on October 1st, 2024, that will be hosted on the Optimize My Life station. The show is created by and for autistic and neurodiverse individuals. This initiative aims to provide a much-needed platform for these individuals to share their experiences, exchange knowledge, and foster a sense of community.
“It’s a safe and supportive space where neurodiverse voices can be heard and celebrated without judgment or pressure to conform to neurotypical norms,” Mary states. This is a response to the demand for such spaces, as most social media platforms fail to offer these individuals an environment free from misunderstanding or bullying. Building Bridges is bound to fill this gap.
Listeners can expect to hear candid conversations on topics that affect neurodiverse individuals but are usually ignored or misunderstood in mainstream media. The show will feature discussions on mental health resources, emotional regulation, financial independence, and more. They’re all delivered by people on the spectrum who understand the challenges accompanying autism and neurodiversity firsthand.
“One of the main goals is to educate families, caregivers, and allies on how to support neurodiverse loved ones better and offer them practical tips. More than this, the show wants to convey to children that it’s okay to be themselves while showing them like-minded individuals who have gone through similar situations,” says Mary. The show will give voice to those who have lived it instead of only receiving advice from neurotypical professionals who may not fully grasp the realities of living with autism or other neurodiverse conditions to fulfill this vision. “This is what makes the show authentic and a relatable source of information,” she adds.
Mary has always been a well-known advocate for autism and neurodiversity. As the founder of Supportive Minds, her interactions with clients motivated her to start Building Bridges. Many of them expressed frustration with social media platforms where their voices are usually misinterpreted or dismissed.
Mary’s experience working with clients with autism made her discover a disturbing pattern. Some therapists and professionals, despite their good intentions, were unable to truly help because they lacked a personal understanding of what it means to live as a neurodiverse individual. “Traditional therapeutic strategies don’t always work because professionals are often reading from a book—they don’t live in that world. This show is about creating a space for honest conversations, real support, and community,” the host supplies. The high suicide rates among neurodiverse populations cemented Mary’s decision to create the radio show.
Preparations are in full swing before the soft launch on October 1st. Mary and her team have been hard at work interviewing podcasters who are also on the spectrum, coordinating schedules, and conducting market research to determine the best times to air the series. One of the show’s contributors, a long-time friend of Mary’s, has taken the lead in creating segments focused on financial literacy. His story will serve as an example to help listeners understand how financial decisions impact long-term well-being.
The show is bound to be a one-stop resource for autistic individuals. Besides giving a voice to those who have felt silenced or misunderstood, it can catalyze a ripple effect that would promote greater understanding and empathy in the broader public.
