County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas has proposed that his fellow board members help authorize an auditor-controller's office look into the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's “cost management process” after it recently settled a lawsuit for $30 million.
Ridley-Thomas notes that the agency is estimated to be heading toward $250 in red ink and can ill afford to let that kind of money fly out the window. He wants to find out whether “appropriate controls, reviews and approvals took place in recent cases” at the MTA, according to a statement from his office.
The supervisor actually wants an auditor to look back at three years' worth of lawsuits at the MTA. He wants a “cost-management review” of sample cases to find out if the agency has been wasting money.
He asked his fellow supervisors, who also sit on the MTA board, to introduce and help approve the audit proposal there.
