About 5,000 people showed up to memorialize actor Paul Walker and car enthusiast Roger Rodas in Santa Clarita yesterday, sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker told reporters.

The gathering was unsanctioned and didn't have permits, authorities said, but cops decided to step aside and let Walker's fans, in the kind of import customs that were a signature of the 40-year-old's Fast and the Furious roles, ride on.

Traffic was tied up and parking was nonexistent, but it was a peaceful event (photos and video at the bottom):

The captain said a few thousand cars showed up, with several of them towed and 40 cited for illegal parking.

A 29-year-old was arrested after cops spotted him walking down the sidewalk with the butt of a gun sticking out of his waistband, according to this report. He was allegedly carrying a concealed and loaded weapon.

Fans signed wall-sized artwork dedicated to Walker and Rodas, who were friends. Someone brought and set up a Christmas tree. There were plenty of flowers and candles. And custom cars cruised slowly around a loop, part of the most solemn car show ever.

Parker said about 13 different Facebook pages encouraged people to come to the site of the duo's death between about 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday.

Walker was riding in a rare, 2005 Porsche Carrera GT that Rodas was driving when it crashed and burned on the afternoon of Nov. 30.

Both men were dead at the scene.
