Full Frontal Disco
Akbar, 4356 W. Sunset Blvd., Silver Lake, Sat., April 6, 10 p.m. – 2 a.m., $5
The population of Silver Lake isn't nearly as poseur-heavy as you might have been led to believe. For every bearded hipster brat who moved to the 'hood in the past year, there's a longtime local who's been liquoring up for years at such local watering holes as Akbar, Good Luck Bar, 4100 and the Eagle.
Akbar in particular exemplifies the creative cross-section that's still very much the heart of Silver Lake nightlife. At its semi-regular Full Frontal Disco night, gays and straights alike gather and grind to high-energy grooves courtesy of Slash Fiction and Nelstar — and almost always get treated a wild midnight dance performance as well.
This week, the club's in-your-face performances will reach new heights as the artsy-electro dance group Hi-Fashion unveils its new single “Eighteen.” Hi-Fashion got some attention late last year with an appearance on perezhilton.com, but the L.A.-based dance act was a regular on the club circuit way before garnering gossip-blog love. The duo has a full live gig at Satellite next week, but this mini-club performance just might be the best environment to experience Hi-Fashion's excess and essence.
