Cerebral Ballzyis a hardcore punk band from Brooklyn. Influenced by Void and Circle Jerks — and benefiting from the artwork of Black Flag's black flag designer Raymond Pettibon — this five-piece band sings about standard punk fare: drinking, skateboarding, partying and more drinking. We dug around for a few more obscure facts:
Honor, the band's singer, has tattoos of the Beach Boys and one of Ozzy Osbourne in a poncho, playing guitar.
Their first EP, You're Idle, came wrapped in grip tape to “f*ck up all your other 7″s.”
The sound you hear in the background of “Puke Song,” off their latest release, is that of a toilet flushing.
Their new record, released in March 2011, was recorded by Bronx member Joby.
The band recently told The Village Voice that their name is about being a “cerebral, ballzy group of kids.”
Guitar player Jason Banny is vegan.
In a 2009 interview with Chief magazine, they said they keep getting progressively worse. Banny added, “We work really hard to write the worst music we can every time. It's … fuck, it's a lot of work.”
Guitarists Mason and Jason are originally from Santa Barbara.
Other band names they considered include Terry Schiavo, the Schiavo, Forties and Flannels, Terry Schiavo and the Schiavos, and the Helen Kellers.
Of their music, Banny says, “We're not gonna reinvent the wheel. We just spin it really fuckin' fast.”
Cerebral Ballzy perform on Tues., June 7, 7 p.m., at the Echo, 1822 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park. All ages.
