Academy Awards weekend in L.A. is madness so rather than exhaust ourselves party hopping the typical Oscar bashes, L.A. Weekly opted to check out what the rest the city had to offer. We indulged our inner geek at Skirball Cultural Center's new exhibit “Zap! Pow! Bam! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950,” grubbed at Farmers Market's Mardi Gras, saw The Game at Club Nokia, got our tech interactive on at Mindshare LA, and… yes… danced on stage with Prince at the Avalon.
Zap! Pow! Bam! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950
Skirball Cultural Center's new exhibit “Zap! Pow! Bam! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950” features a mind-blowing collection of superhero and comic book rarities including the first sketch of the Joker, the earliest known sketch of Superman, plus a copy of Action Comics #1 which contains the first appearance of Superman. Check out the slideshow for more photographs and read more in Gendy Alimurung's Style Council blog, “Jewish Boys and Comic Books: Zap! Pow! Bam! The Golden Age of Comic Books at the Skirball.”
Farmers Market at the Grove celebrated Mardi Gras over the weekend with a variety of Cajun food, sweets, a costume contest, a Mutti Gras pet parade and live music. See more photos in Shannon Cottrell's slideshow.
L.A. rapper The Game brought it home to Club Nokia Friday night, throwing out cash and bangin' out hits. View more photos in Timothy Norris' slideshow.
Mindshare LA at Hangar 1018
Its motto being “Enlightened Debauchery,” Mindshare is a monthly networking event that attempts to integrate substance into L.A. nightlife, combining expert science and art talks with pastries, lively conversation and themed surprises. Read about this month's event that focused on sex, sensuality and the laws of attraction in Alexia Tsotsis' “Mindshare LA: Sense and Sensuality the Second Time Around @ Hangar 1018.”
