If you love cheese the way Wallace loves cheese, here's some good news to ring in the new year: DTLA Cheese at Grand Central Market, located near Tacos Tumbras a Tomas and directly across from the future location of Belcampo Meat Co., opened last week.
DTLA Cheese comes to Grand Central Market courtesy of Lydia and Marnie Clarke, both of whom also own Cheese Cave in Claremont. Though real estate dictates less cheese at the downtown stall than at their Claremont store, you'll find a solid variety of domestic and imported cheeses in the case here nonetheless: burrata from El Monte's Gioia Cheese Company, say, or the tantalizingly named Le Secret de Compostelle from France. If, however, you don't know your Wensleydale from your p'tit Basque, the folks behind the counter are generous with both advice and samples.
Beyond the wedges in the case, there's a kitchen helmed by chef Reed Herrick that makes all sorts of terrific things behind a beautifully tiled wall. As you might expect, the menu revolves around cheese: There's a triple cream, cheddar and Basque cheese plate that, if you believe the menu (and we do), is “popular for a reason.”
There are also a few raclettes here, meaning you have one more place to see how good melted cheese can be when it's draped over potatoes. DTLA Cheese's rendition come with roasted baby potatoes and your choice of manchego, chorizo, rock shrimp and romesco or habanero cheddar cheese, avocado cream and a cilantro slaw. There's also soup, salad and sandwiches, including, as you might expect, a grilled cheese sandwich and a terrific pork loin sandwich.
DTLA Cheese is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
