Recently on KCRW, L.A. Times food critic Jonathan Gold attributed our city's status as a non-pie-eating town to Angelenos' fear of lard. Prove him wrong at KCRW's fourth annual Good Food Pie Contest at LACMA. Radio host and emcee Evan Kleiman presides over Gold, fellow Times food editor Russ Parsons and more than a dozen other writers, cookbook authors and bloggers as they judge hundreds of edible entries in the fruit, nut, cream/chiffon/mousse and savory categories, as well as pies inspired by one of the museum's current exhibits, Chris Burden's sculptural installation Metropolis II. Among last year's winners were classic apple and banana cream pies, a toffee pecan chocolate pie and a Persian Tart. The day also includes music by a KCRW DJ and food and wine by Patina. Time to kick those frou-frou, boutique cupcakes to the curb and bite into a real American dessert. LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd.; Sat., Sept. 8, 2-4 p.m.; free. (323) 857-6000, lacma.org.
