63-Year-Old Man Pronounced Dead after Multi-Car Accident near Hildebrand Avenue

SAN ANTONIO, TX (March 27, 2024) – Late Thursday evening, Mauro Mendoza Santos was killed in a multi-vehicle collision at the 4500 block of southbound Highway 281.

Police officers responded to the scene at approximately 9:00 p.m., near Hildebrand Avenue on March 21st.

According to reports, Santos was assisting in changing a tire on a Black Dodge Dart parked behind a Red Ford F-350 on the shoulder. It was noted that the trailer of the Ford F-350 extended beyond the white line marking the edge of the road.

While navigating near a hill crest, the driver of a Toyota 4Runner veered in an attempt to avoid the vehicles, leading to reduced visibility. Consequently, the Toyota collided with the trailer of the Ford F-350, causing it to lose control. The impact caused the Dodge Dart to spin out of control, striking a nearby Black Mazda 5 and ejecting Santos off the bridge.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced 63-year-old Mendoza deceased at the scene, while the driver of the Dodge Dart was transported to the hospital with expectations of recovery.

Upon evaluation, authorities found no indications of intoxication in the Toyota 4Runner driver. At this time, an active investigation to determine further information on the crash on Hildebrand Avenue is still currently underway.

Deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family and friends of Mauro Mendoza Santos.
