When it comes to alcohol, rum enjoys a particularly passionate fanbase. It’s the main ingredient in the tastiest tiki cocktails of course, but the sugar cane-derived spirit has more varieties and flavor profiles than many know, and its biggest fans enjoy savoring it all by itself. The second annual Los Angeles Rum Festival (aka the SoCal Rum Fest) offers aficionados and casual drinkers alike a chance to gather and try a multitude of brands with an emphasis on rum education, history and creation processes. Tasting events round out the activities, from a “Trade Industry Session” for bar professionals to network and sample, to a “100% Estate Grown Rum” seminar focused on the distilling process, to a discussion and drink session featuring Spanish-style rums, to a “Tropical Potions” presentation highlighting stories, beliefs, and rituals attached to the islands where many of the tastiest rums come from. If you’re interested in learning more about the elevated nuances of this celebrated sip, sail on in. There will also be a tiki marketplace and a lively, liquored-up crowd. The Los Angeles Rum Festival, Friday, September 8, 4-9 p.m. at the Majestic Ballroom, 650 S Spring Downtown Los Angeles. More info at larumfest.com
