The James Beard Awards took place this evening in Chicago, and Los Angeles got no awards!!! (This is not entirely true. Guelaguetza won an America's Classic award, which is awesome. But we knew that was going to happen, it was announced a while ago.)
As usual, New York City took most of the national awards. The winners for Outstanding Chef, Outstanding Pastry Chef, Outstanding Baker, and Outstanding Restaurant were all New York-based. In categories where Los Angeles had contenders: Best Chef in the West, Rising Star Chef, Outstanding Chef, Outstanding Pastry Chef, Outstanding Wine Program, and Best New Restaurant, we got nada.
This is particularly depressing in a year when Los Angeles is widely seen to have come into its own culinarily in a big way. And a let down because we rocked the nominations.
Here are the complete list of winners. Congrats, and all that.
