An epic, two-week-plus Labor Day DUI crackdown culminates with checkpoints and extra patrols this weekend.

The California Highway Patrol says its “maximum enforcement period” for the holiday starts at 6 tonight and ends 11:59 p.m. Monday. During that time last year more than 1,100 suspected drunk drivers were arrested by CHP officers statewide and 49 people died in highway traffic crashes.

The Los Angeles Police Department and other agencies are warning you they'll be looking extra hard for drunks behind the wheel. The LAPD says that giving specific warnings dissuades people from driving after one too many: it could save lives.
