If you're still hoping to snag that primo Mother's Day brunch reservation, perhaps it's time to ask whether mom would prefer you bestow yet another dried up lavender sachet upon her at that sub-par Sunday brunch next weekend, or might she rather be sipping a just-brewed lavender Hefeweizen at an eco-forward brewery for a worthy cause? We thought so.
Karl Strauss is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year with an even bigger Beach to Brewery Beer and Music Festival at the San Diego-based brewery than years past. Last year's sold-out event was 70 kegs strong with $13,000 of ingestible dollars raised for the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.
This year's 7th annual bash promises more beer (21 on tap, including that 21st Anniversary Ale), more live music (the opening band's drummer is a Karl Strauss brewer), no plastic cups (reusable tasting glasses only) and for cycling-up-from-the-beach IPA fans, your bikes can be parked overnight while you sip.
Reef Break Red, a high-alcohol (8.1%) Belgium strong ale that's a collaboration effort with Bill Hickman, homebrewer and Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter Coordinator, will be tapped. There will also be several new Karl Strauss experiments to opine over, including that lavender Hefeweizen, and a black pale ale with dark malts and sinamar (hence the name “sintail”), a dark German-style malt, to give it that edge. Might we suggest you stay for a brewery tour or three? It's all for mom, after all.
