2 Occupants Fatally Injured, 1 Airlifted after Wrong-Way Accident near Interstate 20

REEVES COUNTY, TX (April 9, 2024) – On Thursday evening, a car accident claimed the lives of Juan Lopez and Luis Zamora in a head-on collision on State Highway 17. Around 8:15 p.m., law enforcement rushed to the scene approximately two miles south of Interstate 20.

According to authorities, Laura Archuleta, 42, was driving a Ford F-150 northbound on the highway when she attempted to overtake a semi-truck. However, the maneuver failed, leading to a collision with an oncoming GMC Sierra in the southbound lanes.

Both Juan Lopez, 22, and Luis Zamora, 40, from Rio Grande City, succumbed to their injuries at the crash site. Meanwhile, emergency responders airlifted Laura Archuleta to UMC in Lubbock with severe injuries. Initial investigations revealed that Zamora was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Emergency crews temporarily closed the surrounding area to facilitate cleanup and preliminary investigations. Those with additional information concerning the incident are urged to promptly contact local authorities.
