Athletes aren’t the only profession turning to OnlyFans to make ends meet. Teachers are flocking to the subscription-based platform to try to supplement their nearly universally low pay, and it rarely ends well for them.
Not long ago, 29-year-old Elena Maraga made headlines after she was fired from her position as a teacher at a Catholic school. Before her OnlyFans account was discovered by a parent, she had worked in the infant room at the private Catholic school for five years. The teacher lived with her parents and struggled to get by on the €1,300 a month she made as a teacher. And that’s when she turned to OnlyFans.
Maraga explained her decision: “I love teaching children, it’s my calling. But I earn much more on the Internet. I opened OnlyFans a month ago, partly for fun, partly out of curiosity, partly to see if you could really earn money. In one day I get a month’s salary.”
That financial freedom is why 34-year-old Kirsty Buchan joined OnlyFans as well. Buchan was a physics teacher at Bannerman High School in Glasgow until her explicit second income source was discovered.
It’s hard to blame Buchan, considering she claimed to make £60,000 in just one month on the platform. But that’s not stopping Glasgow City Council from judging her, and referring her case to the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
The former teacher and mother of one will face three allegations when she goes before the disciplinary panel.
The GTCS claims that around 2022, Buchan set up her OnlyFans account under the name “Jessica Jackrabbitx” with a bio that included lines like “good teacher gone bad…really bad” and “big t**s and sexy tight body” photos. They also allege that she did not ensure that her profile could not be accessed by the public, including those under 18 without them needing to log in or subscribe to OnlyFans. While it seems that the responsibility for keeping minors off her account should lay with OnlyFans and not the creator, GTCS doesn’t care. They also claim that she gave a newspaper interview about her decision, which, to them, proves that Buchan is “lacking in integrity” and that she failed to take steps to prevent her being identified, thereby risking bringing the profession into disrepute.
But Buchan isn’t standing for the backlash, defending herself online saying, “You can hate me if you want. I don’t like narrow-minded people who make judgments on folk they don’t truly know. I have an everyday woman’s body and don’t mind showing my flaws. This is about standing up for my story and OnlyFans and promoting feeling good about yourself.”
As for why she decided to go down this path, she added, “I’m not looking for the world, just to be able to provide for my son.”
Buchan will have a virtual hearing on the matter this month.
