Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass appointed Dominic Choi as interim Chief of Police as Michel Moore is set to retire.

Choi will begin his stint as the first Korean-American chief in LAPD history on March 1.

“Ultimately, my goal is to set the stage and establish the framework a smooth transition for the next chief of police of the Los Angeles Police Department,” Choi said Wednesday. “This is an incredible opportunity for me. I’m excited to get ready to do the work.”

On the force since 1995, Choi said he would not be eligible for the next chief position and would return to his previous duties as assistance chief, upon the appointment of a new chief.

“The search for our next chief of police continues,” Mayor Bass said Wednesday. “And I know that LAPD is in good hands with our new interim chief Dominic Choi.”
