There’s something special and unique about an artist infusing their culture into their creations. Art is all about making someone feel something, and what better way is there to accomplish that than using personal roots to tell a story?

That’s precisely what designer and art director Rosemary Macgregor does throughout her artistic process. Macgregor seamlessly integrates her Scottish upbringing with her global design career, bringing authenticity, creativity, and a distinctive perspective to luxury brand identities.

The artist grew up in Scotland and attended The Glasgow School of Art. Macgregor credits the university for helping her discover her passion for design and art direction—on top of meeting her lifelong friends.

Most people have heard of writer’s block, but artist’s block is just as much of a creative hurdle. Macgregor said, “Whenever I need a reset or fresh inspiration, I return to my family home in the Highlands, where the natural beauty and tranquility always rejuvenate my creativity.”

Anyone who’s looked at a single photo of Scotland can easily understand how much of an inspiration that unbridled beauty can be. Add in the nostalgia of childhood, and Macgregor’s effortless ability to connect with people through art makes perfect sense.

Becoming an Art Director

It didn’t take long for Macgregor to become a sought-after art director. She particularly enjoys the creative freedom that comes from working for herself. As her own boss, Macgregor can push boundaries, take risks, and create work that aligns with her passions and values.

On top of working with clients she believes in and maintaining a balance between her work and personal life, it’s basically an artist’s dream scenario. It can be difficult for artists to work within a box instead of allowing their muse to take hold and guide them through each new project. Macgregor is grateful for the autonomy to make decisions that drive the direction of her work.

As an art director, Macgregor is often tasked with solving visual communication challenges. To work through those issues, Macgregor creates identities, designs, and layouts that effectively communicate the brand’s message, vision, and values in a way that resonates with its target audience.

Curating an Impressive Client List

Macgregor’s wealth of knowledge and deep understanding of diverse markets allows her to create innovative, impactful designs that resonate on a global scale. Her impressive roster of clients and the projects she’s helmed over the years speak for her.

Some of Macgregor’s career highlights include re-branding Paul Mitchell Pet and working with Harper’s Bazaar UK, GRAFF, Boden, Selfridges, and Town & Country UK.

Making Waves in a Competitive Industry

In an oversaturated design and branding industry, it’s incredibly difficult for artists to stay relevant and distinctive. Macgregor’s Scottish heritage helps her bring something new and impactful to the table, which keeps clients (and their audiences) interested in her work. First and foremost, Macgregor helps brands create meaningful, timeless visual identities.

Macgregor believes in embracing authenticity and playfulness in her work, which prevents her vision from getting stale. The art director stays true to herself and her art without chasing trends. “The most impactful brands don’t follow—they lead,” Macgregor stated.

Macgregor is a firm believer in embracing imperfection and growing with it. “Every mistake is a lesson—embrace them. Enjoy the journey, and most importantly, have fun with it. Never lose your sense of playfulness—in work and in life!“
