Apparently, people in Hong Kong are keeping their bits to themselves these days. Sex experts are advising the population of the city to increase their private time because, going by recent studies, no one is getting any.
A survey done by City University's Community College shows that couples in the city are having sex less than twice a week — 1.6 times a week, to be precise. (I don't know where the .6 comes into play…someone's clearly not able to finish what they've started.)
Reasons for this lack of love include career driven mentalities, pressure from financial worries, and believe it or not, a lack of space. Yes, you read that correctly. According to experts, there is simply not enough room in Hong Kong to get it on.
Professor Emil Ng, associate director at the Family Institute of the University of Hong Kong, says, “People say Hong Kongers have the least amount of sexual knowledge in the world. One of the reasons is they have no place to have sex.”
With more than 7 million people crammed into the city's many high-rise apartment blocks, no one has space or privacy for their extra curricular activities. And astronomical property prices in the city, combined with its huge population, means that most of the residents can't afford to move out of their parents' houses and apartments until they're well into their 30s.
If anything is a passion killer, it's parents. No one wants to take home a lady or gentleman friend knowing Mom and Pop are going to be lying in awkward silence in the next room.
The lack of sex could also be due to a lack of sexual confidence. A survey done in 2008 by condom manufacturer Durex revealed that people from Hong Kong rank third lowest in the world in relation to sexual confidence. Then again, maybe if they had more sex, they would be more confident. It's a Catch 22 situation, really. The poor dears.
However, this may be just as well, because as we all know China has been enforcing a strict one child per family policy since the 1970s due to the overpopulation problem in the country.
