It may be the first day of the new year, but it's also, perhaps fittingly, National Bloody Mary Day. Instead of the usual spirit-fortified Mary, which typically follows a night of thorough intoxication, why not try something a bit more detoxifying?

Matthew Kenney, owner of M.A.K.E., the “living foods restaurant” in Santa Monica, has created this non-alcoholic turn on the Bloody Mary. According to Meredith Baird, Creative Director for Matthew Kenney Cuisine, “The V10 is great for a hangover because it's packed with vitamins, trace minerals and healthy sodium that helps balance out the hangover that usually comes from too much alcohol in combination with sugars. This drink provides ultimate cell replenishment.”

Put simply, it's a twist on the typical V8, but without a can in sight, and it's available at M.A.K.E. by special request, based on seasonal availability of the ingredients.

If you can't make it to Santa Monica Place, maybe because you're too hungover — or you live anywhere near Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena — maybe make one of these at home.

Makes: 1 drink

4 Roma tomatoes

4 large carrots

1 small beet, washed and peeled

1 red bell pepper, seeded and stemmed

1⁄2 large head celery

4-5 leaves kale

1 large bunch parsley

1 large bunch cilantro

1 bunch spinach

1 jalapeño, seeded and stemmed

1 lemon

1 lime

Pinch of cayenne, to taste

Pinch of sea salt

1 sprig rosemary

1. Process all the ingredients except rosemary through a juicer.

2. Garnish with the rosemary sprig.
