President Obama declared April “Budget Responsibly” Month yesterday. April also happens to be Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month. Unbeknownst to San Francisco-based The Melt (with a location downtown), their grilled cheese sandwich giveaway will cover both bases — looking out for both your wallet and your plate.

The first 10,000 people to sign up at eatcheese.com by next Friday, April 12, will receive a QR code for a free melt (value up to $6.75). And it doesn't have to be redeemed at the downtown location either; the offer is applicable in all 15 spots.

Other places — albeit not free — celebrating Grilled Cheese Month include the Counter, with weekly grilled cheese specials throughout the month, beginning with the Greek (think feta, sharp provolone, cucumber, olives, spinach and sun-dried tomato vinaigrette on Texas toast) this week.

Elsewhere, there is Eric Greenspan's taleggio and short rib version at The Foundry. Vegetarians have long known about the “secret” grilled cheese sandwich at In-N-Out. And we're keeping an eye out for any events with Mark Peel, whose grilled cheese sandwiches are missed.

Where do you go (aside from your kitchen) for a good grilled cheese sandwich?
