Happy Anniversary Martha! Six years ago this morning, Martha Stewart was released from jail. As you may recall, Stewart spent five months at the minimum-security federal women's prison in Alderson, West Virginia after being convicted for lying to government investigators about the sale of a few thousand shares of stock in a biotechnology company.

It occurred to Stewart's fans, many of whom wore Free Martha T-shirts and threw parties the night of her release, that her situation could have been, well, a little cooked. Stewart, who was named the third most powerful woman in America by Ladies Home Journal in 2001, was undoubtedly guilty. But one wonders how many powerful men do some sketchy stock trading every day. What was Bernie Madoff doing while prosecutors were making their case against Stewart? Not to condone breaking laws of any kind, but just saying.
