Gossip Grill is a colorful, lively patio bar and restaurant in San Diego that doubles as a dynamic nightclub. The space, designed with feminine-inspired art and its iconic neon sign that says ‘Welcome Home Beautiful,’ evokes a sense of freedom and joy. It invites guests to enjoy Hillcrest how it was always meant to be experienced—outdoors. Combining modern American comfort food with an inclusive atmosphere, Gossip Grill welcomes and celebrates everyone. Moe Girton, General Manager and Owner of Gossip Grill, had a long journey before making her dream of an inclusive women’s and LGBTQ+ bar a reality. Her career in the hospitality industry began in 2000 when she worked at a lesbian nightclub in San Diego. As the years went on, many of the women’s bars in the area closed, creating a need for more spaces catering to women and queer people.

In 2009, Girton fulfilled her mission of building a space that embraced all women, including queer women, bi women, trans women, and non-binary individuals. If many bars use rigid labels, Gossip Grill was designed to be more expansive, breaking free from traditional gendered terminology. The small space eventually outgrew its original location.
Five years after its establishment, Gossip Grill expanded to its current 6,000-square-foot venue, which includes a nightclub that offers unforgettable nights of music and dancing. It grew, but its mission of creating an environment where everyone could have fun, feel safe, and celebrate individuality and community remained.
Gossip Grill hosts various events that celebrate queer culture while making room for joy and connection. It’s known for its vibrant “Late-HER Happy Hour,” the uproarious “Bingo Gone Bonkers,” and the fabulous “Kings Club Drag King Show.” There’s always something happening to bring people together. Gossip Grill even provides a unique and exciting wine club experience where it’s all about having fun, being true to oneself, and letting loose in a safe, judgment-free environment.

The establishment ensures thorough staff training and security protocols are in place so everyone can relax, enjoy, and feel secure. The bar is committed to being a place where everyone is treated with respect, and any form of discrimination, including transphobia and harassment, is strictly prohibited.
Interestingly, Gossip Grill isn’t just a place for nightlife but also a community hub. The restaurant hosts educational events and fundraisers for causes that matter to the LGBTQ+ and women’s communities. Think self-defense classes and informative workshops about queer family planning and real estate.
As Gossip Grill celebrates its 15th anniversary, Girton reflects on how far the establishment has come. “The most meaningful part of this journey has been hearing how Gossip Grill has changed lives. People tell us it’s where they met their spouses, where they found solace when they were at their lowest. It’s overwhelming in the best way. Some of our staff were disowned by their families, and now we get to be their chosen family. Knowing that we have this much impact on people, we just feel so fulfilled,” she shares.

Knowing that Gossip Grill is where people come to feel seen, to feel safe, to find joy, that’s what keeps me—us—going.” Indeed, Gossip Grill has become more than just a place to eat, play, and dance. It’s a true home for many.
