The New Beverly Cinema is showing two of Sarah Polley's films back-to-back, beginning at 7:30 p.m. In the documentary Stories We Tell, Polley navigates her own family's secrets. Then, in Polley's first feature as director, Away from Her, we follow the marriage of a retired couple (played by Gordon Pinsent and Julie Christie) as the wife develops Alzheimer's and begins a relationship with another man. You can also catch this double feature on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 14

This weekend, the inaugural Cambodian Town Film Festival will showcase new features, shorts and trailers, either by Cambodian filmmakers or containing Cambodian themes, as well as a few rereleased classics. The first film, from director Kalyanee Mam, is A River Changes Course, a documentary about three young Cambodians trying to keep their traditions alive in the face of the modern world. The screening is at 11 a.m. at the Art Theatre in Long Beach, followed by a Q&A. For VIP all access on both days, the price is $200; tickets to the kickoff party Saturday night are $40.

Before The Lord of the Rings or Titanic, one of Hollywood's longest films was the epic Civil War romance Gone With the Wind. See Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable in their iconic roles on the big screen at the Aero at 7:30 p.m. Fun fact: The American Film Institute has named Gable's exit line — “Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn,” which comes more than 3 hours and 56 minutes into the flick –the most memorable American movie quote.

Wednesday, Sept. 18

What do you get when you combine an island, party cruises, celebrities and films? Catalina Film Fest 13. This year's five-day run will see Sharon Stone receive the Kramer Social Artist Award — named after filmmaker Stanley Kramer, whose body of work includes Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and Ship of Fools. There also will be a Tony Scott tribute, which includes a screening of True Romance; Jon Favreau being honored with the Charlie Chaplin Icon Award; the screening of Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael's upcoming Ass Backwards, plus a Q&A and afterparty; and much, much more. A five-day VIP festival pass is $350, although just $280 will get you access to the VIP party cruises Friday and Saturday. (Bargain!) The “Catalina Soiree” begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
