For Closure Dig Doughboys: Gizz Lazlo of L.A.-area punks For Closure told us about his love for a Doughboys gem.

Gizz Lazlo: This album is perfect! I heard it in 1990, about a year after its release, and on the very first spin, I was hooked. Everything about this album rocks! The songs, the musicianship, the harmonies, plus the fact that all four members sang lead on at least one song. Doughboys, on this album, are the punk rock Beatles, hands down! This album continues to inspire me in my writing and singing.

It’s only ten tracks, but every song is brilliant! From the opening banger, “Buying Time,” to the closing ballad, “She Doesn’t Live There Anymore,” this album leaves you wanting more. It’s a perfect collection of songs. It was produced by ALL/Descendents members Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton, and I mean, come on, they invented the power-pop-punk sound and you can hear that all over this entire record. The lyrics of “White Sister” still give me chills to this day. I’ve been blessed enough to have recorded vocals for two of the band’s songs. I recorded “In My Head” from Home Again with For Sale and “Happy Home” from their Happy Accidents album with another band I perform in, Wörmwood. I’m hoping both songs see the light of day on an upcoming tribute album.

I listen to this record at least once a month while driving somewhere. If I’m recording vocal tracks for any of the bands I sing for, this is the album I listen to for inspiration on the way to the studio. John Kastner is one of my top ten favorite singer/songwriters. He is ridiculously amazing at what he does. I was lucky to meet him in the late 1990s and he was an absolute gentleman. I’ve been honored to call him a friend ever since that day.

If you want to know where all the pop-punk bands you listen to got some of their sound from, this is the band that did that!

For Closure Dig Doughboys: For Closure’s single “No Condition” is out now. The debut album is out this year.
