Since Condé Nast made their Sophie's Choice decision last week to keep Bon Appétit and shut down Gourmet magazine, there has been much speculation about how this is going to affect the former publication, the editorial offices of which are here in Los Angeles. Bon Appétit Editor-in-Chief Barbara Fairchild sent us this email:
“Gourmet's closing was a loss for both the industry and its readers. It was a magazine that helped shape the food conversation for almost 70 years. We know its readers will continue to use and cherish their issues.”
Fairchild, who was out of the country when the Gourmet announcement was made and has been “unable to talk” about the events, according to the magazine's publicist, has just returned and is “concentrating now on getting caught up and focusing on the magazine.” As far as what's on the menu, so to speak, “right now at Bon Appétit it's business as usual… each magazine at the company is tightening it's belt.” Hopefully the belt isn't tightened too much further. How are we going to eat all that Thanksgiving turkey?
