Michele StuevenA fixture at the most glamorous runways, including the upcoming Paris Fashion Week on Monday, March 2, and a trusted presence within the tight-knit circles of McQueen and Stella McCartney, Charlotte Jackson insists that personal style has no size, tags, or age limitations.
Founder of The Curve Authority, a luxury fashion authority redefining plus-size couture and inclusive representation, Jackson says there’s fashion, and then there’s style. It’s up to you to make it your own.
“I’m an everyday housewife and mom,” Jackson tells LA Weekly. “Fashion should be fun and playful. Everybody’s not walking a red carpet every day, but there are ways to feel good about what you’re doing. It’s okay if you’re the jeans-and-t-shirt girl. You can jazz it up with a nice button-down shirt with big bows on top.”
And with glamorous award season underway, Jackson notes the viral train trend and miles of fabric that have swept the red carpets by stars like Margot Robbie and Teyana Taylor.

“Lots of fabric is the trend this season, ” she says. “The more and over the top, the better. No minimalist looks right now. Lots of great colors and flowing material where you can really express yourself. My favorite? I’d have to go with Teyana Taylor. She’s been killing the game with every look from head to toe. She takes ownership of knowing what works for her. She’s looking great in all types of fashion. She switched up her hair the other day and is very comfortable with flats and a bomber jacket. She’s very expressive and successful, representing a lot of different brands.”
Jackson, who is leading conversations around 45+ women, a demographic that, according to Nielsen and AARP, represents the greatest spending power in entertainment and media.
She shared some style and fashion tips with us:
The standard plus size in the US is 14. The average woman is between sizes 12 and 16. We are the norm. Then there are plus sizes that can go anywhere from 14 to 28
I encourage women not to shop online and go for the in-store experience. Have a second set of eyes and don’t look at the number. I know we’re trained to look at the size, but sometimes it’s discouraging. Concentrate on the fit; you’ve got to try it on. Then you can pull the jewelry and shoes that match the outfit. There are experts in the stores who can help you through it.

Don’t give up. It can be frustrating as a plus-size woman when you go into a store, and they don’t have your size, so you have to buy it online. You get home, and it doesn’t fit, and you give up. You may even end up going down a size after trying it on. Don’t be afraid to try stuff on, and don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t fit.
Dress for your body type. Once you figure out what your shape is, it’s so much easier to put on clothing and makes you feel so much better. Wear the clothes, don’t let the clothes wear you. You don’t have to be a fashionista to pull it off.
Don’t go into these stores with shapewear on. You want to see what truly fits. Putting on shapewear later will only improve it. Whatever rolls I get under here is me, and I know that the garment truly fits.
Hair is fashionable too. You can play with it and do all kinds of different things in different colors. Do what you’re comfortable with. If you’re not a heel person, there are kitten heels, and if those are too much, put the flats on. It’s just about feeling good in your clothes. Make it your own.
There’s nothing wrong with investing in one evergreen luxury item, one statement piece that you can throw on with a pair of jeans that elevates the look. Maybe a nice structured blazer, and there are a lot of brands that carry the same look for less.
There’s a way to look like a supermodel on a budget. I may have a pair of Gucci heels, but my dress is from Fashion Nova. You can get great, affordable looks at H&M and come out looking like a million bucks. Also, when you invest in anything, whether it’s H&M or a Dior dress, take care of the garment. Follow the care instructions on the label to preserve your investment. It will last a long time, and you’ll keep gravitating back to it in years to come. You’re mixing and matching it with new styles coming out. You don’t have to break the bank to make a lasting impression.
Get rid of all the noise. Go into a store with your best optimistic outlook. If you don’t find anything, go into the next store.
