The sun is shining. People are celebrating. And police are once again on the prowl.
Yes, it's time for your weekend DUI checkpoint cheat sheet. The Los Angeles Police Department and other agencies are legally obligated to warn you when they're going to be running checkpoints; they can be seen as unconstitutional searches and seizures unless you're warned.
But the LAPD does you one better by giving you specific locations for its operations and by also telling you when and where its roving DUI patrols will be. The argument here, says the department, is that drunk driving decreases when folks know cops are on the hunt.
Here's the 411 for this weekend:
-Tonight from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. an LAPD DUI checkpoint will be waiting for you on Lincoln Boulevard and Maxella Avenue near Marina del Rey.
-Tonight from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. the sheriff's department will be operating a checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the high desert city of Lancaster.
-Saturday from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. extra police will be on the streets of Koreatown searching for drunks behind the wheel. The LAPD calls this a “saturation patrol.”
-Saturday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. a saturation patrol will the streets of the LAPD's 77th Street Division area in South L.A.
-Saturday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. a DUI checkpoint will be awaiting your arrival on Ventura Boulevard at Columbus Avenue in Sherman Oaks.
-Sunday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. a saturation patrol will hit the streets of the LAPD's Foothill Division area in the San Fernando Valley.
-Sunday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. a saturation patrol will greet the motoring citizens of the department's Mission Division area in the San Fernando Valley.
Be safe. And don't forget to use (sun) protection.
