After you read L.A. Weekly's “Confessions of an Uber Driver” story, exposing the ethically questionable economic model of the ridesharing service, you might have found yourself thinking twice about using Uber instead of a good old-fashioned taxi service.
Well, now Uber has an answer to that: How would you like it if your Uber driver was superstar DJ/producer Diplo? Moral quandry solved!
Yes, for today only, from 3:30-6 p.m., the man behind hits by M.I.A., Chris Brown, Usher and his own Major Lazer project will be taking the wheel and picking up lucky Uber passengers all over Los Angeles. If you've ever wanted to sit in rush hour traffic with one of the handsomest guys in dance music, now's your chance.
Diplo's two-and-a-half-hour Uber shift is all part of a promotional tie-in with Spotify, which is now being offered in select Uber vehicles in a handful of cities. All you have to do, according to a Spotify press release, is connect to your Spotify account from the Uber app and presto! You can be annoying your driver with your terrible taste in music in no time.
Other recording artists are pulling Uber duty in other cities today, as well, including Matt and Kim in New York, country star Jake Owen in Nashville, and Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew in Toronto. A full list of participating cities and artists, as well as detailed instructions for how to maximize your chances of scoring a ride with Diplo, are up on the Spotify blog.
