There won't be a tutu or tiara in sight as Los Angeles Ballet lets its hair down (literally) and unleashes its season finale NextWaveL.A. As with prior editions, LAB artistic directors Thordal Christensen and Colleen Neary have drawn four choreographers from two sides of L.A.'s dance world to create brand new contemporary ballets. From television, LAB continues its affiliation with So You Think You Can Dance's Sonya Tayeh, whose third work on LAB dancers passionately considers couples breaking up. This marks SYTYCD's Stacey Tookey's first work for the troupe as she explores the art of being in the moment. Choreographer Josie Walsh is known for her blending of ballet and aerial gymnastics for her L.A.-based MYOKYO company. Walsh's second LAB commission explores those seductive, mythical sirens who lure sailors to their doom. Completing the quartet, Kitty McNamee is artistic director of L.A.-based Hysterica Dance Company. McNamee's first turn with LAB ponders the phenomenon of obsession and blind obedience. Over the next three weekends, NextWaveLA moves among its home theaters in Redondo Beach, Glendale and Santa Monica. Three chances to catch this next wave.
