Someone once said, “life is short; eat dessert first.” Then again, perhaps she didn't have to choose between cream puffs, cheesecake, cupcakes, ice cream, s'mores and chocolate-covered bacon all in one sitting. Which was exactly the dilemma we faced last Friday night at Savor Los Angeles' sweets event, held at La Brea's Miauhaus Studios and packed with sweet treats from Frosted Cupcakery, XT Patisserie, Plaisir, Pure Cheesecakes and Gotta Have S'more and others.
Entering the event's double studio set-up was like going to Disneyland for the first time. Attendees spent the time in line devising sugary strategies in hushed tones. We overheard one man anxiously ask his date, “Okay, where do we head first? XT or Plaisir?” Another woman, with the event's VIP ice-cream sundae hand stamp, headed straight for the Pama Liqueur and Freixenet champagne bar. Others simply went with the evening's flow, eyeing and eating their way through more than ten tables of colorful desserts that popped against Miauhaus' gleaming white soundstage.
Sound indulgent? It certainly was; but Savor Los Angeles was also an eco-friendly event with no plates, recycled napkins and rapid biodegradable spoons and cups. When attendees inevitably needed a palate cleanser — in this case, something savory — they could head outside to the No Reservations food truck, choosing among six movie-themed wraps including “Rosemary's Baby” (rosemary chicken, smoked gouda and Israeli cous cous) and “Silence of the Lambs” (roasted leg of lamb marinated in a pomegranate red wine sauce). An Intelligentsia Coffee Bar was also on hand, for a caffeine jolt to go with the sugar high.
