The mayor of wealthy San Marino was caught by a security camera tossing a bag of dog poop onto a neighbor's property.
And now the whole matter is under investigation by the police department that ultimately answers to him. Strange? It could be a case of alleged vandalism or even trash dumping. Cops call it “littering.”
The neighbor in question says he thinks the episode is a result of his opposition to a dog park proposed for the area:
The resident, Philip Lao, has since also said that the “no poop” sign he placed in his yard might have also provoked his honor, Dennis Kneier.
Police said in a statement sent to L.A. Weekly that the incident was reported Saturday at 6 p.m. in the 1400 block of Charlton Road.
“The bag was tied closed and appeared to have been intentionally placed at the walkway entrance,” the department states.
After reviewing video, Kneier was identified as the poop tosser, cops said. And while Lao said he doesn't want to press the matter, police say they're still investigating.
The mayor has said that he and his wife were walking home when they came across the bag and he decided to move it out of the walkway. Kneier told the Whittier Daily News, which broke the story:
I made a mistake of putting it in his walkway. Rather than leaving it, I should have walked on by or disposed of it properly.
He has since sent a note apologizing to Lao. The resident says he's not accepting the mea culpa because he believes the mayor is, well, BS-ing.
