Republican Rep. Mark Souder said he had “sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff.” During a hearing in Washington, D.C. in March the politician questioned Baca's ties to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), calling it one of the Muslim organizations that “do speech that is radical.”
The normally cool Baca went off:
” … For you to associate me somehow through some circuitous attack on CAIR, is not only inappropriate, it is un-American,” Baca said. He mentioned his own military service and said that it was important to keep friendly ties with different communities. He later told KPCC (89.3 FM) that “when a member of Congress is that misinformed, you gotta question whether or not they understand what their constitutional obligations are when it comes to public safety.”
It looks like Baca got the last laugh.
