It was a sad day for early birds and late-night clubgoers last Wednesday, July 17, when Norms in Santa Monica closed its doors for good after 47 years of serving steak and eggs at all hours of the day. News of its (then impending) closure was first reported in early May by outlets like Grubstreet and LAist.
The 24-hour local chain was founded by Norm Roybark, who opened the first spot at the corner of Sunset and Vine in 1949. On its Facebook page, Norms bid adieu with a note of thanks and encouraged its customers to visit the Westwood location on Pico near Sepulveda. There are 16 remaining locations, with two slated to open — one in El Monte and the other in Pico Rivera — by 2014.
