With the exception, perhaps, of the kamasutra, few have understood the incredible sensual, aesthetic and, yes, sexually suggestive possibilities of bodies in combination as Pilobolus. Long before the ubiquitous Cirque du Soleil franchise popularized gymnastics-infused dance, Pilobolus caused dance audiences to go gah-gah at the elastic potentialities of the human body. At the 2007 Academy Awards, the backlit Pilobolus dancers assuming incredible shapes, once again triggered the whisper through the audience: How do they do that? That frequent reaction, along with the imaginative, innovative and often humorous choreography, helps to explain the company’s continuing popularity and creative success for four decades. Figure out for yourself how this marvelous company works.
